Web & Print Design
Kuesel Excavating, Co. is an excavating contractor in O’Fallon, Missouri. Established in 1952, this real big company has a real big history… but one small problem — their outdated website was a deep dark pit of online despair. Slow to load, a nightmare to update, poorly optimized (if at all) for search engines, and a project section that barely reflected the truly impressive awesomeness of what they do — using it as an online tool was like trying to dig the foundation of a skyscraper with a plastic spoon… it worked… but only just.
That’s not the way Kuesel does business. Working with them, MayeCreate came to admire how Kuesel places a company-wide emphasis on client satisfaction: from estimating to managing and supervising projects, the company takes pride in close client relationships maintained over the years. That’s the kind of corporate ethos and company work ethic MayeCreate Design can get behind. So we rolled up our sleeves, dug in, and got our hands dirty helping Kuesel build a website as impressive as the work they do.
Over 60 years ago, “Old Man Kuesel” started the Kuesel Excavating Co. by digging basements with teams of mules, yes — mules, eventually growing the company into what it is today: a full-service excavation and site development operation completely run by engineers, yes — engineers.
Modern day Kuesel Excavating Co. now maintains a fleet of over 200 machines, trucks, and support equipment, allowing them to offer a wide range of excavation services throughout the Midwest.
Kuesel prides themselves on the integration of advanced technology and equipment while providing said services, so it made no sense that their website was about as dynamic as a pile of… dirt.
The old website didn’t reflect the company culture or what it did. Their project section was woefully out of date, containing only low-quality images of fully constructed buildings. Buildings are great, but Kuesel doesn’t construct buildings, they move earth. The images didn’t showcase the excavation work Kuesel did, work that generally takes place during the start of a project.
It was time for an overhaul…
Like our client, our construction process starts with digging the proper foundation. This meant engineering a custom-built WordPress theme designed to give Kuesel a flexible, scalable framework. Even more importantly, Kuesel’s new WordPress site is easy to manage and update as often as needed, allowing Kuesel Excavation Co. to display their excavation expertise and rank better on search engines, accomplishing their ultimate goal of driving more traffic to their site.
Speaking of driving traffic: we built a unique service page for each service Kuesel provides: grading, soil stabilization, site utilities, demolition and stream bank restoration, all featured on the main Services page. This is great for SEO. From there, we created individual project pages to highlight the specific challenges and successes of each project: again, ideal for SEO. The new project section is sortable and easy to update. Every time Kuesel adds a new project to their website, they add a new page to their site which Google’s algorithm loves: super awesome for SEO. Finally, we trained Kuesel on their site’s functionality so they can continue adding projects each time they complete an excavation job. (Training is a facet of all MayeCreate web design projects: super great for SE— well, actually… just good to know.)
Kuesel recognized they had to be focused on their contracting responsibilities and would lack the time and resources it takes to thoughtfully craft quality content for their website. Our team of writers and editors worked with Kuesel to sculpt the message they wanted to present online to not only capture their voice but to also achieve their online marketing goals.
Excavation means using heavy machinery to reshape the earth. That’s a good time. The thing is, piles of soil just aren’t always sexy. So, the final step to building a next-level website was to give Kuesel’s new site a modern look. We started by actually incorporating their company colors into the design and working with Kuesel to capture images that properly conveyed the kind of work they do. Thanks to the trained eye of a professional photographer, Kuesel was able to acquire stunning in-progress and completed images showcasing their impressive skills as well as their super fancy equipment. Win-win.
