The Truman VA Medical Research Foundation (TVAMRF), has been a longtime client of ours. Their last site was built in 2010 and as you can imagine, many things have changed over the last nine years. As a model nonprofit organization dedicated to innovative VA health research, the TVAMRF couldn’t rely on a website that was built during the first Obama administration. They decided that it was time for an update, seeking to modernize their website and give it a more functional interface for both visitors and researchers alike, including:
To get the job done, they enlisted the help of the friendly developers at MayeCreate Design. It was a call we were happy to answer — not just because they’re one of our favorite clients — but because we share the foundation’s commitment to innovation and support their mission to improve Veterans’ health.
The Truman VA Medical Research Foundation was founded by the administrators of the Harry S Truman Memorial Veterans Hospital. Their mandate: to provide support for health researcher’s administrative and management challenges around external funding, public donations and fundraising. The TVMRF manages the acquisition, distribution, compliance, and financial record keeping of research funding, allowing for more efficient research in areas of interest to the improvement of Veterans’ health.
A nonprofit organization, TVAMRF began in May of 1991 as the Missouri Foundation for Medical Research. In 2015 the organization changed its name to include “Veterans” to more accurately reflect those whom it served, and updated the name again in 2018 to clearly display its ties to the Truman VA research hospital.
Today the TVMRF is tasked with attracting new research funding and soliciting gifts centered on discovery and innovation for veterans health. They find opportunities for investigators to do bench research and clinical trials in the area of cardiovascular, hematology/oncology, ophthalmology, endocrinology, neurology, and nephrology.
Just like in the field of healthcare, the online world is always changing. Keeping a website up-to-date is essential for maintaining good page rankings and site traffic.
One of the most important determinants of rank is compliance with Google standards and best practices. Google’s search algorithms regulate how websites appear in the search results. We proactively designed TVMRF’s updated website in accordance with these standards to ensure the site would be easily accessible on the world’s most popular search engine.
The site was redesigned with a clean, modern look, with non-obtrusive elements and a more elegant use of space. This decluttering helps make the site more intuitive for first time users, giving donors, researchers and other visitors streamlined access to the information they seek.
Requiring less time for excessive navigation allows more time for consuming content and ultimately an improved experience for the TVAMRF audience. Donors are able to support Veteran’s health research directly directly through the Donate page, where MayeCreate was able to integrate a third-party payment processor called Stripe allowing users to complete donations without leaving the site. While certainly convenient, Stripe integration has the added benefit of protecting TVMRF by not requiring them to run or store sensitive credit card information directly on their server.
Another focus for this website was to present appropriate foundation members, staff and directors intuitively throughout the site. At the bottom of the About page one will find the board of directors, contributing community members, staff leaders and administrators. Within the Areas page visitors are directed to the six disciplines of research that the TVMRF funds: Cardiovascular, Hematology/Oncology, Ophthalmology, Endocrinology, Neurology and Nephrology. Within these individual pages visitors can find the investigators that conduct the research, along with drop-down bios to help further present the work of foundation members and researchers. Completed projects and studies can be added to these research pages to display the organization’s findings (and improve future search rankings) as well.
Equipped with a freshly redesigned website the Truman VA Medical Research Foundation continues their mission to assist critical research funding and improve the quality of healthcare for Veterans throughout our country.
