The first step in building long-term relationships with your nonprofit’s donors is finding meaningful ways to recognize them for their gifts. As DonorSearch’s donor retention guide explains, “Although stewardship and retention are separate steps in the traditional donor management lifecycle, they actually overlap. If donors know that your organization is grateful for their contributions, they’ll be more likely to give again.”
While offline methods like thank-you notes and appreciation events are still effective for some supporters, other donors today would likely prefer innovative, digital expressions of gratitude for their gifts.
Fortunately, there are easy and cost-effective ways to spruce up your approach to donor recognition, especially if you leverage your organization’s website.
In this guide, we’ll walk through four online appreciation strategies that resonate with nonprofit supporters. Keep in mind that donors warrant more intentional recognition as their gift size increases, so some of these strategies will be more appropriate for certain giving levels than others. That being said, let’s dive in!
1. Automate thank-you messages for your online donation page.
Today’s donors expect a smooth online donation experience from start to finish—a streamlined form, multiple payment options, and immediate confirmation that their gift was processed. For many nonprofits, online transactions make up the bulk of their small to midsize donations. So, the most efficient way to fulfill donors’ expectations is by automating an on-screen message and an email with an attached donation receipt to send when a donor submits their gift.
These automated messages are a perfect opportunity to kick off your stewardship process. Besides beginning with a “Thank you for your donation!” statement, make sure to include:
- The donor’s name and gift amount to personalize the message and show them you value their support.
- Your nonprofit’s branding—as NXUnite explains, consistent branding demonstrates your organization’s credibility and builds trust with supporters.
- Information about your mission and the projected impact of the donor’s gift.
- Social sharing buttons so donors can tell their networks about their passion for your cause.
- Contact information for your organization in case donors have questions.
For low-level online donors, use your confirmation messages as the first step in an automated welcome series that encourages them to learn more about your nonprofit and explore other engagement opportunities. Mid-level and recurring donors should also receive more tailored recognition throughout their involvement with your organization, but this confirmation is still important for them to know their donation was successful and that you appreciate them.
2. Develop a virtual recognition display.
If you’re looking for a special way to honor your nonprofit’s major donors, a virtual recognition display can be an effective addition to your website. This is similar to a physical donor recognition wall, but without the space constraints and construction fees.
Your organization can customize its virtual recognition display in various ways. For example, you might:
- Divide up your donor wall according to gift size, including a tier system for major gifts and a separate section for legacy gift donors.
- Add pictures of your donors or funders’ logos with their consent.
- Write short impact stories that illustrate how your nonprofit has used major donors’ contributions to improve its programs or achieve large-scale campaign goals.
- Create an interactive map that shows the different places around the country or world from which you’ve received major donations.
- Allow visitors to leave comments thanking major donors personally.
Additionally, make your recognition display shareable so you can promote it on social media and incorporate it into your digital annual report to expand its reach.
3. Create donor spotlight content.
Donor recognition can happen nearly anywhere on your website if you strategically create inspiring, interactive content. Let’s look at a few types of donor spotlights you could feature on your website (with the subject’s consent, of course).
Blog posts
These long-form articles provide plenty of space to dive deeper into your donors’ backgrounds, motivations, and impacts on your work. Tell the story of the donor’s contributions to your organization, and include quotes from them and other individuals (such as your staff members or their loved ones) as appropriate. Make these stories easier for online audiences to read by breaking up the text with subheadings and images.
Videos
Donor spotlight videos can supplement blog posts or stand alone in other places around your website, such as your About page or pages for the programs that donors have supported. Interview-style testimonials are a compelling format since they encourage donors to speak freely about their experience with your nonprofit. Then, add relevant photos and video clips (known as B-roll in video production) over parts of the donor’s interview to illustrate their gift’s impact and enhance the video’s visual appeal.
Annual report
In addition to a list or virtual display recognizing all major donors for a year, many nonprofits include more in-depth stories about a few impactful supporters in their annual reports. These are usually similar in format to blog posts, although they should be shorter if your report is an interactive website and longer if it’s a PDF. You also don’t have to limit these spotlights to major donors—if you feature legacy society members or longtime volunteers in your annual report, you can encourage more supporters to make planned gifts or sign up to volunteer!
4. Offer exclusive tools, resources, and benefits for loyal donors.
If your nonprofit has a membership program or recurring giving program, use it to offer exclusive benefits as a thank-you for these donors’ consistent support. After all, it can be gratifying for them to receive a little something in return for their generosity, especially since donors in these programs are among your most loyal supporters.
Some potential member and recurring donor perks you could offer include:
- Exclusive newsletters to help supporters keep up with everything going on at your organization.
- Early-bird event registration that includes discounted tickets or VIP experiences.
- Free branded merchandise so donors can showcase their support for your mission through clothing, drinkware, and other products.
- Appreciation dinners where program members can meet each other and your nonprofit’s leaders face-to-face.
- Access to community-building tools like an online membership portal or recurring donor Facebook group.
If you aren’t sure which benefits your members or recurring donors would appreciate most, send out a survey to get their direct input. Additionally, collect data on newsletter open rates, early-bird fundraiser and appreciation dinner signups, and activity with your community-building tools to determine whether donors like your perks and adjust your strategy as needed.
By taking full advantage of your nonprofit’s website, you can make your donor recognition efforts unique, engaging, and effective. Use the strategies above to appreciate your donors in meaningful ways, and remember that showing gratitude is just one important part of an effective donor retention plan.
