If keeping your website up-to-date has you looking like this…it may be time to call in the pros.

You have a new website, it looks great! That’s awesome. Now, you just have to keep your beautifully designed website up-to-date! Are you asking yourself “What does it all mean?? I thought I was done!”

Your website may be perfect now, but here are 3 very good reasons to update and maintain your website regularly:

  1. It lowers your chances of being hacked and keeps your security working right.
  2. It keeps everything working smoothly. Plugins are updated regularly and outdated plugins can break your whole site because of their outdated code.
  3. Updating the content, or the information, on your site keeps visitors informed, entertained and connected.
That may seem overwhelming, but don’t worry. You have two options for maintaining and updating your website:
  1. Make your updates through a professional.
  2. Make your updates on your own.
Both options have their pros and cons, but really it just comes down to your personal preference, budget and overall knowledge of the behind-the-scenes of a website.

Updates Made by a Professional

Pros:

Updates made by someone who makes a living working on websites everyday, especially the person who built your website, means two main things:

  1. Your update will be done right.
  2. Depending on the size of the update it will probably be done fast.

As professionals, we pride ourselves on these two factors. You trust us to make these updates to your site and we don’t waste your time or money.

Cons:

Web designers gotta eat, too, which means we do charge for updates. Most professional designers and design companies charge an hourly rate for updates and those rates vary from company to company. Keep in mind most of the time professionals have other clients, as well; you might have to wait in line for a little bit.

However, like I said earlier, we pride ourselves on efficiency. While the upfront cost might be higher, in the long run you will probably be spending less time and money by working with a professional instead of training yourself and doing the updates on your own.

Updates Made on Your Own

Pros:

It’s cheap…mostly. MayeCreate offers WordPress training, as well as an HTML Bootcamp. These workshops do cost $15-$20, but they can help you get your foot in the door to understanding how to navigate the back-end of your website.

If you already know how to make updates to your site, via FTP, text editor, or your content management system (example, WordPress), two things.

  1. You don’t need to pay someone to update your site.
  2. Why are you reading this post?

The major perk of updating your site on your own? Instant gratification. You get to see your update done right there the second you want to do it, no waiting in line.

Cons:

If something breaks, it’s on you. That may sound harsh, but if, for an example, you update a plugin and your whole site suddenly gives you the white screen of death and you’ve no idea what to do, well, that’s just not good. To put salt in the wound, you’ll have to call a professional to help you out with fixing this newfound issue and getting your website back up and running.

What does this all mean?

If you feel comfortable making updates yourself, by all means go for it. If you always find yourself on the go and just don’t have the time, but you have the budget, give us a call and let us handle it for you. Contact us today and get that page added onto your website you’ve always wanted, or get that annoying “Update Available” message off your website.
