Mobile Friendly Sites Are a MustWe’ve told you about the Google algorithm updates that favor in-depth articles, the updates that have rewarded small businesses for producing quality content, and the “local algorithm” that impacts search results based on location. Now, a new beastie is on the horizon, one that’s predicted to leave a bigger impact than Panda or Pigeon.

New Mobile Friendly Algorithm Takes Effect April 21st

Back in February, Google made an announcement on their Webmaster Central Blog describing the newest update to their search algorithm. Starting on April 21, 2015, mobile-friendliness will play a bigger role in ranking websites in the search engine. Google said, “This change will affect mobile searches in all languages worldwide and will have a significant impact in our search results. Consequently, users will find it easier to get relevant, high quality search results that are optimized for their devices.”

In other words, this algorithm update will impact the organic results displayed on a Google search engine when users perform the search from a mobile device. Websites that are mobile friendly will rank higher on the Google search engine results page than non mobile-friendly websites when performing the search from a smartphone or tablet.

Global Trend Toward Mobile Searches

If you’ve been keeping an eye on your Google Analytics reports, chances are you’ve seen a rise in the mobile traffic to your site. These percentages are bound to increase even more given the simultaneous increase in mobile device users.

2014 was the “Tipping Point” year for mobile device usage according to comScore, with mobile users surpassing the number of desktop users.

According to data from the Global Web Index, smartphones are now the second most popular device used to search the internet, with 80% of internet users owning a smartphone.

Google Accommodates the Mobile Movement

With mobile internet searches creeping up in the ranks, Google is amending their search algorithm to help people find mobile-friendly content. This is great news for those of us who frequently use our phones and tablets to browse the Internet. We’ll have quicker access to sites optimized for mobile displays, allowing for a more user-friendly interface that’s easy to read and navigate.

Algorithm Update Will Negatively Affect Non-Mobile Sites

On the flip side, website owners need to prepare for the change. If you don’t have a mobile website, traffic to your site is likely going to decrease along with your decline in the Google search rankings. Other SEO efforts you’ve made to this point will have little influence on your site’s ranking for mobile searches.
